Cheerleaders challenge standards of vulgarity

#

This Week In India

Once again, the BBC, in its India coverage has produced better picture/caption combinations than I could ever hope to fictitiously assemble. As India continues its crash course toward world superpowerdom, the country has taken logical and necessary steps to prove its might by recruiting all-star teams of international cheerleaders to adorn its cricket matches. As politicians tend to do, however, Indias trusted public servants have raised concerns.

Some politicians say the cheerleaders are “vulgar and obscene”.

I think this fellow’s reaction must speak for many Indian males:

Apparently, a sizable contingent of anti-cheerleading protesters have risen to the sidelines at recent matches — or so the second captioned picture in the story would have us believe:

…and their official uniforms appear to be those of the Spartans in 300. Possibly a contender for best Indian journalism feature of 2008. The Spartans go on to suggest that cheerleaders are for foreigners — not Indians — and deem the women an “indignation.” I think I’m also seeing barbed wire there between the protesters and the cheerleaders. I can only hope this will eventually lead to cheerleaders dancing in suspended bulletproof cages should they be allowed to stay.

This Week In India

Month-old baby Lali was born in India with two faces. Now, her community believes she may have super abilities:

“For the past few days, people have been lining up to see his daughter.

Many of them bring offerings of money, believing that Lali has special powers.

On another note, anyone reading this who may have followed my previous India blogging endeavors will remember the case of Budhia Singh, the prodigy marathon runner. It seems his trainer has been found dead, the latest chapter in a marvelous and tragic story, involving child sales, running, and now murder.

How Scott Stapp quit Creed

The wiki’d band descriptions on Last.fm are full of great hacked-together-isms. I wasn’t familiar at all with who Alter Bridge was until I saw them referenced somewhere the other day, and when I went to Last.fm to find out, I pulled up this great description of why past members of the band Creed decided to form it:

“It was formed by the ex-members of Creed, Brian Marshall (bassist), Scott Phillips (drummer) and Mark Tremonti (guitarist) after singer Scott Stapp called it a day on that, and Myles Kennedy (lead vocals, guitar, and formerly of The Mayfield Four) came in to sing.”

“Alter Bridge’s Biography,” accessed on Last.fm April 11, 2008, 8:00PM

Polite Britishisms are way too few and far between in wiki culture, I propose.

It feels like this.
